It has been a fantastic start to Term 3 in the Middle Subschool. After returning from the break, it has been wonderful to see our students come back ready to learn, engage and, importantly, start thinking more seriously about their future pathways.
The past few weeks have been particularly busy for our Year 9 and Year 10 students, with both year levels undertaking their course counselling and careers programs. These experiences are an important part of helping students understand the opportunities available to them and make informed decisions about their next steps.
For our Year 10 students, Term 3 has provided an intensive focus on careers, senior pathways and preparing for life beyond Year 10.
Students spent a week engaging with a range of careers and pathway information before culminating in a fantastic Careers Expo at the new Geelong Arts Centre. This provided students with the opportunity to explore different pathways, speak with representatives and begin thinking about how their interests and strengths might connect to future study and employment.
Following this, our Year 10 students spent time participating in course counselling sessions with their teachers. This gave students the opportunity to explore the range of VCE subjects available in 2027 and, importantly, to have individual conversations about which subjects and pathways may best suit their interests, strengths and future aspirations.
These are significant decisions for our Year 10 students, and it has been pleasing to see so many of them approaching the process with maturity and genuine consideration of their future.
Our Year 9 students have also been actively involved in the course counselling process, beginning to explore what their Year 10 program in 2027 might look like.
While their process has been a little more relaxed than our Year 10s, students have had the opportunity to explore the broad range of options available to them. This includes considering different elective subjects, accelerated subjects, and opportunities such as the Resurgence Program.
For many students, this is the first time they are beginning to think about how their subject choices can connect to their interests and longer-term goals. We encouraged our Year 9 students to take advantage of these opportunities, ask questions and speak with their teachers and families before they made their final decisions.
The success of these course counselling and careers experiences could not have been possible without the incredible planning, organisation and commitment of our Careers Team and the many staff who gave their time to work directly with students and families throughout the course counselling days.
There is an enormous amount of work that happens behind the scenes to make these opportunities meaningful and successful for our students. From organising the careers presentations and Expo through to preparing course information and sitting down individually with students to discuss their subject choices, our staff have gone above and beyond to ensure students are well supported.
I would like to sincerely thank everyone involved for the time, energy and care they have invested in helping our Year 9 and Year 10 students make informed decisions about their futures.
Course counselling is an important milestone for our Middle Subschool students. While it can sometimes feel like a lot of information and a lot of decisions, the purpose of the process is to ensure that every student has the opportunity to make choices that are informed, realistic and aligned with their individual interests and aspirations.
I would like to congratulate both our Year 9 and Year 10 students on the way they have approached these opportunities so far. It has been encouraging to see students beginning to take greater ownership of their future and recognise that the decisions they make now can help shape the pathways available to them in the years ahead.
With Term 3 now well underway, I look forward to seeing our students continue to build on this positive start and make the most of the many opportunities ahead.
